What is child trafficking?

Child trafficking is the illegal transport of children for the purpose of exploitation. Children usually go with their trafficker through force, deception or coercion and are then sold into prostitution, begging and soliciting, or exploitative labour.

Hidden from sight and beyond the reach of the law, these children are abused, exposed to hazardous working conditions, denied essential services and the safety and security of their families and communities. Treated like slaves, they are exposed to serious health risks, including HIV/AIDS. Many lose their lives; all lose their basic human rights.

.. The clandestine nature of child trafficking makes statistical data difficult to produce. Even when trafficking is uncovered, victims are reluctant to report their experiences for fear of being prosecuted and deported as illegal immigrants. In a small study of just 33 London boroughs in 2004, ECPAT UK uncovered a total of 35 cases of child trafficking. Between 1998 and 2003, 250 cases of child trafficking were recorded in the UK – however, there are likely to be hundreds more unrecorded cases
